Could try fitting pure road tires (but will take an age to recuperate the cost) fit a K&N panel air filter, may make a difference, diesel additives claim to improve power and economy. All said and done if you needed mpg you dont buy a two tonne 4x4. BUT you have saved on 2 tax, 2 service, two maintanence, tax, insurance etc to own just the Navara.

In your case perhaps a long wheel base T5 with the extra seats would have been better, but without being able to see the age of vehicles, running costs etc its hard to say what would have been best. I thought the euro 4's could do 30 plus (what the incar comp says)

If its costing you ÂŁ180 PW more in fuel than the T5 its a no brainer, the Nav has to go. Every T5 owner i know get about the same as me, perhaps a touch more on the 140 BHP engines, also the non chipped or mapped ones.
Like i say without seeing all the details and figures of what you had and what you have its impossible to help in detail.
Cheers warpa.
i havent sat down and worked out the true cost as yet, but it may work out to be better than i am thinking in the long term.

I have always bought new vehicles before, so in the case of the discovery i had, i paid 40k for it. i had it almost 3 years to the day of it going.Got Just over 20k for it.
It was my pride and joy so it was only used for when we went caravaning etc. therefore it only had 12k miles on the clock. this is the painfull bit..
It cost ÂŁ460 per year to have it serviced to keep the warranty up to date, even though it never reached first service mileage.
ÂŁ410 per year road tax.
My vw t5 was new and that cost 3-400 pound every 16000miles for service and again i had to get main dealer to do it,to keep the warranty up.
and roadtax of ÂŁ175.
Insurance not an issue as i have a trader policy.

The Nav second hand, 07, i can service myself at around ÂŁ100. roadtax ÂŁ200........"yes couldnt believe it .. tax gone up to ÂŁ200!!!

i had thought of doing the seat conversion to my vw, but my heart wanted the nav.
I had thought of other alternatives like keeping the van and getting a crappy cheap 4x4. but driving to cornwall with a 27 foot caravan on the back and touring around for the week is not the same in a vehicle that your not satisfied with. I did it years ago with a 200 tdi disco. I had to pry my wifes hands off of the grab rail when we got there.the body roll was unreal.

"I have just been taken for 8.5k from a company that went tits up, these are the reasons for my financial vehicle reshuffle and hence my need to save and conserve the most mpg i can get.
I suppose if my business picks up,then maybe an older panel van may be able to be added to the fleet.......... But for now, i have only just got the Nav, I love the thing to bits "apart from mpg" so shes a bit like a dog....... "for life". :cheers2:

From what you say above i think you will be pleasantly surprised if you sat down and came up with yearly figure for what the two vehicles cost a year compared to a forcasted cost for the nav for a year. The nav being a commercial as you know is 100% tax claimable against your books.
Another alternative (not sure if you are) is to go VAT registered, i did it because all my work is zero rated (new build) so all ever ever do is claim my vat back. Works out at the current vat rate that every ÂŁ47 of fuel i get ÂŁ7 back (quite a saving) every extra i buy for the nav beit touch screen sat nav hifi or an oil change i get to claim all the vat back
Also make sure your tire pressures are spot on, when i was losing a few pound in one i lost 4mpg  It had around 28 psi instead of 35, so not very noticeable to the eye...well it wasnt at all, its the fuel dropping that made me look for a cause.
