After months of cold start stalling and everyone saying it's the timing chain. Finally bit the bullet and bought a duplex upgrade kit and got the local garage (Grants of Wellington - brilliant people) to install it. Few months down the line and no more problems. So to everyone who said it's the the timing chain, many thanks for the advice and sorry I didn't believe you!
