Hi all. Just a quick overview to the above problem. A few weeks ago on a cold morning the oil light came on. Topped up with a little oil and everything was OK but I did notice that under the oil cap it was like thick black grease. I rang the mechanic and he told me to check the oil level when I got home but was having difficulty as the oil seemed extremely thick but level seemed OK.
Roll on till last Saturday morning. It was extremely cold and I took a short drive down to the local shops which is a steep hill all the way down. Noticed the oil light was on but went off when I gave any acceleration(I was looking for a safe place to stop) just as I was pulling up to stop the knocking noise came into it and has been there since.
The mechanic came today and did an oil pressure test. it read 65PSI on a cold start up but when we drove it and let the engine heat up it was reading 15 PSI which he said was dangerously low??
Got it towed to his garage and so far he flushed the engine and replaced the oil which he said was like sludge (last serviced 27000 kms ago) but the noise is still there.
Basically I know I sound like a disaster but has anyone come across this before or have any solutions or is the engine just screwed?

you did a LOT kms with that oil since it became sludge, you would be lucky if you havent destroyed anything

I wonder what oil was used at the last service?

The thick dirty oil has blocked the oilways in the engine. The low oil pressure means the main crankshaft and big end bearings are worn. The knocking is the crankshaft and conrods slopping about. :shock:

The chances are there will be damage to other bearing surfaces in the engine as well. Repairing the bottom end will be expensive and will not address other worn parts in the engine. My advise is speak to Billcar about a full reconditioned engine.

What's the recommended oil pressure PSI?

At idle the oil pressure should be no lower than 17.4psi.

At 2000rpm the pressure should be no lower than 36.3psi

Be aware that thick oil will give higher than normal readings.

Black Death, drop the sump and clean the strainer on the pick up pipe, more than likely restricted, then do an engine flush and hope for the best? Good luck.

It sounds like the wrong oil was used, I have let the odd service drift to 20k miles (32k kms) and apart from the colour it was as runny as normal.
If so, wonder why?
