Ok, its started knocking......

I purchased the NAV a year ago, which had just had a recon engine fitted. I always planned to do the bearing mod, but kept putting it off! 10K miles after the recon engine, and its knocking :(

Having just looked at the bearings, they appear in excellent condition (just the normal scuffs expected on BE shells). Plastigauge indicated the clearances to be well within tolerance. All CR bolts were under a reasonable tension

So, does anyone have any idea about the source of the knocking? The knocking varied with engine rpm (with vehicle stationary!), it ran ok for a few miles (with the knocking), whilst i got off the motorway. From the knocking, I couldn't really tell if it was top end or bottom end, but just figured it was the BE bearings.

On inspection, the crank has been reground (0.75). Is this level of regrind a problem? I have read that the cranks are only surface hardened, and anything more than 0.25 regrind will be through to soft metal. However, after 10K miles, everything appeared (visually) to be in good condition and plastigauge indicated the bearing clearances were 0.05mm. Will I be ok to reuse this crank??

Do the cam chain tensioners fail to tension?

Any help would be much appreciated, before I start stripping top end!!

Thanks for the feedback on the belts.

Do the belts really make a knocking noise at about the RPM of the engine? I am mostly used to worn belts squelling.

Once I get the sump back on, I'll do as you suggest.

We tried the water on the belts-nothing. We tried running without the belts-nothing. Cracked the injector pipe joints to see if it was an injector or at least isolate a cylinder-nothing. Our next job is to take out the engine again and remove the timing chain covers and see if anything is amiss there. This is a replacement engine in which we have changed the bearing shells and fitted ARP bolts and new oil pickup strainer rubber seal. We have a colleague with exactly the same symptoms on his and he's changed con rods, reground crank, new pistons etc.

Shame Nissan are not a responsible manufacturer. All these problems should have been sorted out years ago.

You don't have to take the engine out to do the timing chain tensioners.
as I am sure you already know there was a Nissan campaign (recall) for a defective batch of tensioners, you may get lucky and find it is these that have failed (nice and cheap!)

Hi, This Nissan Campaign (recall) what info do I need to be able to goto nissan to find out if mine is one of the effected units, Mine is a 2003 D22/D23 (depending which church you attend) model. I also have an odd symptom at the moment, I seem to be loosing power sometimes under load, Its very intermittent and has only started since I fuelled up at Morrisons so it could be fuel but Im not sure, I have gone back to my usual Shell diesel and it does seem to be better but the hesitation does return now and then, its annoying really, I have ordered a new air filter and fuel filter which I will change on sunday incase its is this, I have plugged the truck into the snap-on computer to read for faults but none have shown, I have checked for pipe damage near the Turbo and intercooler pipes but all look ok, it feels like the running out of fuel feeling. Help??????

I doubt it is Morrisons fuel, I use it all the time, cheapest around here.
Have you checked the neutral position sensor?
Re: the campaign just quote your Vin No to your local friendly, all knowledgable Nissan stearlership.
Then like myself and Woz go away, still wondering whether you have been sold down the river. listening for tensioner break ups!
Chris

If you give them an engine No. that doesn't match the Vin No. they will laugh you off the premises.
This is the problem I have, finding out if my 02 engine in a 53 car needs the tensioners doing.

Hi, I spoke to Dave @ Billcar today, I am a lot clearer I think its time to say good bye to the EGR valve, Next will be the Engine Mod and tensioners to be on the safe side as I love the truck.. It is running better on Shell Fuel just hate paying 1.23ltr ! We need a new fuel strike, How about a Navara road train blocking a few of the fuel depots in the country ?? The thing is when the fuel was close to 90p all the strikes kicked off and now nothing....
