Thought I'd add a bit more detail.
The abs activates when slowing down to junctions on tarmac, pretty much constantly on loose gravel at slow speed. As I said the garage said everything looks fine bit without a light on the dash it could be anything.

So far I've change the drivers front caliper as one of the piston was seized.
And changed the pads.

I'm at a loss really. Any help and advise would be really appreciated .

 

try it on a rolling road such as a mot test station then you can watch which wheel causes the issue i suspect a faulty sensor or dirt/missing teeth on the pickup ring, also have you checked your wheelbearings?

 

I'll have to try it. I thought that if there was a problem with the system the error light would I fixate that you had a problem.

How would you check the wheel bearing. Sorry I'm not the most mechanically enabled person.

Is there anything I can try at home without taking it to a garage

 

jack it up support it properly hold the wheel top and bottom and see if its got any play

 

I would be looking at in order:

1 Dirty reluctor rings
2 Dirty ABS wheel sensors
3 Brake fluid change (routine requirement anyway)

None of these faults should trigger the warning lights, because as far as the system knows everything is OK, it is getting false information from the sensing system causing the ABS to operate.

 

Almost surely a broken ABS ring. ( Full of rust/dirt or cracked.

Made any suspension modifications lately? Extreme rear lift (or sag) can cause this. Not often as severe as you describe though.

 

Na, the truck is completely standard. I'm going to try and have a look at the reluctor rings this weekend and change the brake fluid and go from there. Is dot 3 fluid ok to use on navs?

 

no abs needs dot 4 and above

you should not need to although am not familiar with the D22 but on most cars they can be seen behind the wheel if you rotate the wheel whilst up on axle stands then you can check the teeth etc

Finally got round to having a look at the reluctor ring, and it looks like you guys were spot on the money. o/s/f reluctor ring is cracked. I tried taking a picture, but it wasn't that great. I can describe it as shallow teeth on a cog with one missing.

Does anyone know if it's hard to replace.. does it come as a separate part or complete with the hub.

only ever seen one done once and it had to be heated in the oven first to fit it, that one had a face to mount it too not sure if yours is the same, for the sake of it i would replace the hub just be very careful with the abs sensor and unplug it before you start

 

I think I may just buy a new hub with sensor

Eventually got sorted, turned out to be the abs sensor ring on the hub.
