I know you changed the belts, but have you gone back and re checked the belt tension?

Good point BP, they do have a habit of "wandering" for want of a better way of putting it.

Ian

PS, not noticed if this is temp' related or not and do not over tighten as this seriously reduces the life span, down to hours for one of my belts

no iw ill have a look i noticed the other day
when i put the new belts i put them on so the
makers marks was in line but after running
i did notice they were both still tight but the makers marks
were not in the same place.
is it just them belts that tap or has anyone else had it with the air/con or pas belts?

Did you change all the belts? Or just the alternator belts? My noise came from the air con one...... and then the power steering one.......have now changed the lot!

no i changed the pas and both fan belts
i just changed the belts i could get at the time nissan was closed
so there was hoping it would clear that noise.
can i ask how can the aircon belt make a noise like that as there is no other belt to tap against?
when i put the new belts on it still made that noise. so i then removed the fan belts started it up
with just the pas and aircon belts in place it still made the noise.

It was my A/C belt that only lasted hours, when I was changing it it never really looked like "wheels" were all aligned properly but then again I had over tightened it, the last time I did it seemed to be more in line, I think it may be the way the tensioning wheel is adjusted but I stand to corrected on that.
The tensioning wheels for all the belts are fixed in place ie not spring loaded, so when a belt stretches a bit and gets noisy it needs to be adjusted. The trick is to get just the right amount of tension onto the belt, next time I do mine I thought I might try and tension each belt up until the noise stops (with the engine running :nailbiting ) obviously doing one belt at a time.

The noise comes from the belt running around the pulley, not hitting another belt. It goes hard, breaks down and makes a racket........on and off until it has an amount of heat in it from running that softens it! weather can make a difference too, wet , cold etc.

I chose not to use Nissan belts as they were bloody expensive for the time they have lasted.......now fitted GATES type, and she is as quite as a mouse!

Hi all not been on for a bit
anyway back to the funny noise.
i have now changed all the belts with gates ones today.
noise still there i an sure its an injector.
since i was last on here i have run the truck as normal with the same belts on
i have now done 1140 miles since i put the injector cleaner in 2 weeks ago now
the truck as run 100% as it always does just with that funny
tap swirly noise every now and then.
so put them new belt on today still there but what i have noticed now is if i start it
the noise comes on about 10 15 seconds after but if i turn it off and restart it no noise straight away
thats why im thinking injector noise? if it is something bad i would have thought it would
have gone within 1140 miles the noise or running of the truck as not got any worse.

Hi, just been reading your post & thought I'd share my experiences with a ticking D22 that was still driving great but driving me potty. Luckily I have a spare engine in bits so I tried everything to cure it including removing the belts, swapping the injectors, injector pump, oil pump, tensioners & the complete head. The problem turned out to be one of the pistons had picked up on it's skirt.... I have no idea what caused this as I've never abused it, got it overheated or run crappy oil in it. Anyway, replaced the piston & ticking gone. Got to be one of the most frustrating faults I've ever had.

hi thanks for that info. god i hope its not that im still running this
as normal every day i have now done 1600 miles like this it does not seem to get any worse
So.....to go back several pages....as suggested by many, have you used a stethoscope or long metal pointy object to use as a stethoscope.......probing around the motor carefully whilst its running to pin point the noise?

Its far quicker than just stabbing around in the dark looking for possible causes!

Personally I use a proper mechanics stethoscope, it was only a few quid on Ebay, earnt its price on the first job.

Lol.... A proper mechanics stethoscope, ain't that a long screwdriver and your ear

Edit, just read the rest of post, how many times has the screwdriver been mentioned..
Arghhhh, shurrup biggi an get back in ya box :wedgie

I use a mechanics stethoscope all the time in our jetski workshops.......it saves so much messing about. Use to use a screwdriver until I found how cheap the proper tool is.....more acute noise so can pin point easier :awesomework

I used to use a screwdriver, but you can't block out any noises from the ear you aren't using, a mechanics stethoscope is so much better.

I bought this truck yesterday, now has 130k on it, he did tell me the answer to this so I thought I'd add it for everyone to know if they didn't, the chap said it was caused by a fuel line letting air in and it making the noise at the injector when it got there..

It's good to hear back when problems have been solved and also good to know the truck is still going strong.
