Hi Guys

Ok, in 6 days time I am taking my D40 to Mongolia. Just come across a small issue and need help quickly to establish the issue and see if I cna quickly fix before we leave.

Here goes.

When the truck is at full temprature, we notice that if we turn the truck off and then back on we get a scraping noise from the alternator for abour 5 seconds, then i guess the clutch kicks in. Also if i rev the truck it kicks straight in.

Now, can someone tell me if this is the pulley i need to replace, Maybe suggest a pulley on ebay?

Also what tools do i need? I noticed this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330848810...57872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&clk_rvr_id=1037164689488&rmvSB=true

Will a 17mm do the job?

Any tips on how to remove the pulley at all? I hope to do this without taking alternator off. Any help would really be appreciated

Sorry for all the questions but we are so stuck for time.

not even sure the pulley can be removed that easily looking at the pics.

Anyway, I saw a family member who is a mechanaic and he said it may not even be the alternator pulley, and asks me am I sure it's not the Viscous fan clutch?

As this only does it when truck is hot, maybe he had a point.

For the price of a fan clutch you could get a brand new alternator (and pulley)...
I know you only have 6 days but it might be worth a bit more investigation to find out before buying bits

Assuming you mean the alternator and not the fan:scratch:

http://www.billcar.eu/BillCar.Limited/en/alternator

Looks like a good price as well. :thumbright:

About 30 minutes to swap over.

We got a new alternator from eurocarparts using their 25% supposid discount and got it for the same price as milner and can pick up today which is nice and quick. ÂŁ169 inc vat... not bad.

old one is now out ready for new one.

We established it was the alternator pulley. Plus noisy when it free wheels when turning engine off.

We will get the old pulley off the old alternator on our return and stick it on ebay with new pulley. Alternator is fine but no time to muck about at this stage with pulleys, straight swap out. Job done.

thanks for your help guys

some pulleys have a built in spacer some dont when you replace yours just check the height on a level surface against the old one discard the space if not required, if you dont the new belt you just fitted starts losing pieces!

go on ask me how i know that!
