hi there got myself a 2005 d22 navara in feb had a new engine put in 20k miles ago as apparently that year had a fualt on the engines that liked to send the pistons throught the bonnet or some such thing. as soon as i got it i took it green laning to see how it did and was very impressed i also whack the enduro bikes on the back when i go racing and laning . only problem im having at the moment is very bad vibrations at between 40 -60 mph that go away once i get over 60 ive got new tyre and rebalanced and done the tracking but its still there. after searching the forum it seems it may be the front props ?? but still cant find a walkthrough talk through how to take them out of check them to see if it is them .

Hi Steve, :welcome

The front propshaft is dead easy to remove, four nuts and bolts at the axle end and four at the gearbox and it'll come off. Before removing it, use paint, nail varnish or Tipex to mark the position of the flanges so when you rebuild it all goes back the way it was. It's worth making both sides of the universal joints as well should you have to rebuild one or both.

Yes, that is a worn universal joint. It should move smoothly in all directions with no side to side play. The dust is a tell-tale that it's worn out as well.

There are quite a few videos on Youtube that show you how to actually change the joint, it's worth watching a few. You can get new joints from Ebay, Milner 4x4 or KsInternational.

So after taking the shaft out the uj's are fine by the looks but the slider part (dont know the technical term) looks corroded and making it not sit straight is it a new prop shaft or can it be sort and is it safe to drive without the propshaft in for a month or so before i can afford a new on

Good question about the joint, the sliding joint in the propshaft was designed to allow for suspension movement on the axle. Obviously the front axle on the Navara at this point does not move like the rear axle so there must enough movement to need it. :dunno

Don't bother trying to get the new shaft balanced, just make sure it goes on the same way as the old one the best you can. When re-using an original shaft it is good practice to mark up the shaft just in the off-chance it may be out of kilter.
