I have a 2006 Nissan Navara which I have had for 16 months, I have noticed in the past few days that after the car reaches full operating temperature and I am stationary for approx 10 minutes or more, when the car is idling the temperature gauge drops to the bottom i.e cold position and the heater blows slightly cooler. NOT COLD. When I start driving again everything returns to normal. This has just recently started happening. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

I would expect the engine to generate enough heat to at least keep the coolant at operating temperature, especially if the thermostat is operating correctly. The thermostat is set to open at 82C, so under that, there shouldn't be any coolant flow and the engine will only be heating the volume of water in the block minus anything washed off by the heater. I don't believe under any normal operating conditions that the gauge would go back down to cool!
In actual fact, when the stat closes at 82 degrees it by passes the water pump. Hot water is still able to circulate under convection (the radiator is hot at the bottom and cold at the top). Add that to a less than perfect viscous fan then most of our vehicles will overcool at idle in the cold weather.
It isn't just the Navara/Pathy, quite a few manufacturers have fitted diesel powered water heaters to get around the problem, quite jealous of my brother's old Freelander with that water heater in the front bumper which gives him a decent heater.
The best option is to convert to an electric fan.
