Hi all, I have an 08 D22 Nissan Navara (in Australia) with the YD25 Common Rail Diesel motor.
It has about 130k on the clock and showing a few symptoms that indicate I may have injector issues, however I realise it is often quite hard to pinpoint what issue is causing what.

I haven't had the vehicle that long but just to run through where I am at;
It is very rattley between about 1700 to 2400rpm when cold - once it gets up to temp it is fine.
Looking on forums this is not uncommon for the yd25 - so alone can't say this is all injectors and there are several possible causes for engine knock.

First tank of fuel averaged 12.5L/100km - Cleaned the Maf Sensor this has now dropped to a much more respectable 9.6L

At this point I thought things were looking better, so installed a TunitChip - This made injector (?) noise on hwy speeds quite noticable so I disconnected straight away.

So I was back to thinking maybe I do need to replace injectors so ran it up on dynotune which showed it had a big rich spot in low RPMs around 1400 and was down on power by probably around 15kw on manufacturer specs - Tuners diagnosis was injectors were pooring fuel in just on throttle causing it to run dangerously rich and also injectors would be causing the drop in power. Agree but again not definitive. They didn't offer much advice as to tuning the rich spot out or if it could be other causes e.g. crank angle sensor out of whack or something but said it is really not good for the motor - get it sorted straight away (I am sure they would of liked to pick up the job of doing the injectors there and then, but that wasn't going to happen)

Starts fine, runs fine, does blow a little black smoke when changing to second gear every now and then, there is a little bit of oil weeping around the intercooler but other than that seems to be going quite OK.

Injectors here are quite expensive, but so are engine repairs if it all goes bang... So I would prefer to do the preventative maintainece than suffer the long term consequences, but I also don't want to replace injectors and then find out the issue is elsewhere. so thought I would stick something up and get some feedback from the knowledge base here before I discuss with my regular mechanic and start pulling this thing down.

Last question are the injectors in the 2008 D22 and D40s the same I know the D40 is running a few different parts and settings which bump it up in power output significantly to the D22 but with the chip mod on the D22 is it worth considering going a different injector for the increase this makes?

How about having the injectors tested?

I have a D40 and thought I had a problem with them. I needed to remove them to get their serial numbers to buy replacements anyway, so I sent them off for testing.

There must be a diesel/Denso specialist in your area that can do this for you, it's a lot cheaper than replacing them all and will identify any problems. I believe the D22 injector tips can be changed at a reasonable cost.

Good luck

Yeah have talked to local service agents who said they can do a 'cold scan' or onboard scan that may identify issues, or if they are removed they can do a more comprehensive bench test.

I didn't think the injectors were servicable parts i.e. tips couldn't be changed?

I have since found I can get much cheaper genuine Denso injectors online and if I go through the process or removing rocker cover and injectors I might as well replace the injectors, by the time you add up the cost of dyno, testing etc. I am halfway to getting injectors replaced.

If your injectors are on the way out that could cause over fuelling, increased by the higher output with the tuning chip.
I was led to believe that an engine and fuelling system had to be in perfect condition before you tried to tune it.
Get your injectors checked out first to see if you have a fault with them.

Would these faulty injectors cause a top of engine knocking/excessive smoke On a cold start until warm

as my 2010 nav 188bhp auto does this every morning for a few minutes until it warms up

It just been serviced with all new filters and oil and a new turbo
