Hi all, My rear diff has started to whine on acceleration with a horrible "crunching" type noise when you tap on/off on the throttle. Have done diff oil change, but still the same. Slight leak from oil seal, which i will replace, but can someone give other suggestions as to cause? bearing? or centre bearing? How can i check and know it's either? Thanks

What type of gear oil did you use LSD, Normal mineral or Synthetic?

what my manual states. API GL-5 80w-90
Thanks
Wrong oil Mate.
D22's have limited slip diffs, you need to drop the new diff oil and replace it with LSD type oil, this has extra friction additives to allow the internal clutch plates to slip (hence the name).
Continued use with normal gear oil will wreck the clutch plates.
This may not be the cause of the noises, BUT if the diff is locked up due to the wrong oil it definitely won't help, when normal oil is in a LSD diff it is common for creaking and cracking noises due to the plates locking then suddenly letting go.
Be cheaper to first try LSD oil before a new diff/axle?
This won't be an immediate 'magic' cure it may take a little time to work it's way into the friction plates, sometimes the diff benefits from using an engine flushing oil first.

Chris Vince, Thanks for the input. I never knew mine had limited slip and i'm still sure it doesn't, but other than take it off road (which i have done) is there any other way of knowing? I will certainly look into what you say. I have recently had my clutch repaired and find it odd how since having it done i now have diff issues, perfectly fine before it went in for a new clutch. Should there be play in the centre bearing?
Thanks

Jack the rear up, both wheels off the ground, spin one wheel the other will spin the same way with a LSD, if it spins the other way, normal diff.
A few single cabs had normal diffs all double cabs had LSD's.

Mine is a normal diff. wheels spin in opposite ways. So the oil i'm using is correct.
Not necessarily, it may have already have had a diff/axle swap from a single cab in which case yes to the last sentence, OR more likely the plates are already finished and the noises may be from them breaking up, in which case NO?
But far too late to save them!

Landmannn? So what are you suggesting is the cause? saying to replace an entire diff is not very useful information i'm affraid!
it is pretty self explanatory, however if it is still intact on Dana LSD diffs you will normally find a tag which tells you its lsd and needs lsd oil, if a diff is crunching then normally the damage has been done and the quickest and easiest option in the uk is to just swap it with a known good used one importing parts is an option but its very expensive.

Should be no play in centre bearing!
Surely the state of the oil should give you a clue. Run it through a fine mesh filter set up.
As you say you have recently had the clutch replaced is it possible the UJ s are not in line on the prop shaft as that can cause funny noises.
