Hi all,

I have been in contact with Billcar about getting the engine mods done. They surgested I may want to get the timing chain and the cluch done whilst there.

My Nav has done 70,000 miles and had a fairly easy life as far as I can tell. What are your thoughts on changing the timing chain if it has not shown any sighns of needing it. As ever money is tight and I dont want to fork out if not necessary but I know it would be easier to get it done then and forget it.

Thanks

I did the mod myself (following helpful, friendly advice from Dave at Billcar :thumbleft: ).

I fitted a full timing chain set whilst i had the engine out, as recommended by Dave.

I cant remember if its the earlier YD25 D22's that suffer from chain problems, due to infererior parts, of if the earlier ones are started to show more problems due to them being older, and generally of higher mileage - i hope that makes sense

As for the clutch, i inspected mine and it looked good, as well as feeling strong and driving well, so didn't bother. To be honest, in hindsight, i wish i changed it regardless, because i know one day in the future, i will have to either remove the engine again to change it, or will be spending a long, stressful day laying under the :censored: truck sliding the gearbox back to do it :(

Although like most of us, money probably doesnt grow on trees, i would get both done if you can stretch to it and you intend to keep the truck.

If not, get the chain done in preferance to the clutch, as if the chain gives up it will probably be 10 times more expensive to put right than the clutch will if that packs up!

HTH and good luck mate :thumbleft:

If you are stripping the engine out to do the mods you may as well get a new clutch and timing chain done at the same time. It'll give you peace of mind and save you the cost/bother of replacing them later on.

In the long run it is cheaper to do it now than later on.

Guys I agree with what you are saying just at money is tight at present and at over a grand to get mods plus chain plus clutch done, that's a lot of fire wood to sell!!

**** it, Billcar gave me a price to do the lot, I can make ÂŁ200 a day at it (and that is good value best quality BTW), I have a goal and I will get there!!

..... and all the other things I want.....

Guys How much is a Timing chain Kit?
Or is it just the Tensioner?

I have recently been hearing a clicking noise upon start up and im told its the timing chain tensioner that needs replacement but maybe its the chain too?

i have an '03 Nav

AFAIK it was the guides and tensioner that was faulty, Nissan can tell by ser no if it was supposed to be replaced by them FOC.

Mine was and it was an 03. :thumbleft:

Clicking noise is not the big ends?

NNman, get the chain done if u r keeping the truck, peace of mind and all that, i sell a bit of firewood and at 50 quid a load, yes its a lot of wood, but a whole lot more wood further down the line, and even more important to do it if like me your truck is at the core of your business :cheers2:
