This is really interesting, many thanks for sharing. Some will remember me as a former moderator on the forum and the issues I had with my chassis which included removal of rear truck bed, full rust treatment, stiffening plates welded inside and out for good measure plus full wax-oiling by Rust Buster in Spalding, all at a cost of £2,200.

A year later I received the same letter from Nissan making reference to corrosion issues with 'some' D40 models and that they wanted it in for yet another inspection and either treatment, repair or buy-back. Of course they couldn't see any issues as it had been fully treated but they could see where I had the plates welded. As a consequence they treated the chassis again inside and out.

I remember saying at the time that I was thinking of taking Nissan on to get my treatment costs reimbursed, as I considered the letter a smoking gun, and an admission that there was, indeed a problem.

May I ask how you went about the litigation process? Was it through the Small Claims Court, did you represent yourself or go through solicitors, and were you awarded costs as well as the financial settlement?

I'm assuming that Nissan offered it without acceptance or liability?

Update on my Truck, with it booked in for October I decided to call another dealer, they can inspect it next Saturday :)
So will drop in and see what they say, mine will be 12 yrs in June so happier that they will check before then...
They did say that they were overwhelmed with trucks to treat and cannot give me a date for doing this.. but at least if its confirmed that it needs done then they should honour it.

They all get treated if not for the scrap heap! Thats where I think the confusion has come about with the previous dealer they are all pretty quick getting them inspected but all have a long list to treat. From what you said about the previous dealer I assumed that was for the treatment as they wanted it a week the inspection takes an hour or two.

Quick update, dealer called and cancelled my visit, found out that there were also two outstanding recalls... power seat harness and power seat switch! So now booked in for next weekend and they will have a courtesy car for me, thats the good news :confused:
with the covid-19 issue ramping up and me being "at risk" I am too worried to risk the unecessary exposure. I will have to cancel and see if they will collect and return the truck at some point.

another update, Nissan cant collect the truck.... the dealer told me that if I cant get to them before the end of the month my claim will be rejected :oops:
I dropped a quick mail to Nissan UK to ask if they would honour my claim due to the current circumstances, they said YES... well done Nissan, credit where credit is due..??

Na, I wouldn't write it off just yet.

You haven't even tried cleaning up any bad spots to check.

For sure, from the picture ti looks to be pretty well flaked up, but it's impossible for anyone to tell unless inspected themselves.

The steel is thin on any modern vehicle, so the chances are some spots may need attention, spring hangers, cleats, out riggers, cross members etc etc. But until you check properly, you won't know if simply a spot of welding will fix it up strong. Question is, is it worth it.

All that being said, it's been left way too late, someone has been carried away with the top shiny bit, and forgot the truck has a bottom bit.

I have seen a vehicle with a lot less than that obvious flaking condemned! It already has full depth perforation of the metal and the main chassis rust from the inside out. As you say with the age of the vehicle its very unlikely that Nissan will take anything other than the cheapest option to them and im afraid thats write off. Must admit it worries me that with all the publicity theres been, people are still buying them without checking them first.

You live and learn popsdosh, I know a lot more now than I knew when I bought it. I never intended buying a Navara, I was looking at Mitshibushi's, but the 3 I had looked at weren't worth the crazy money being asked, this came available at half the cost and after a quick google I read a couple of posts including the chassis and went to see it.... It was cold wet and snowing, the truck was cheap and had been MOT'd 2 weeks prior. I took a punt.

Either way, if Nissan pay out or I have to weld it, it will serve its purpose. It was going to cost me £1500 to put a tow bar on my car so I could go to the dump with garden **** and move fire wood around, and this wasn't much more. I go to a local motocross circuit to take photographs, the route in has already damaged my front spoiler, the truck will save me an expensive repair here. Also I used it through the snow this year, where I live is quite high up and we get the worst of the snow even compared to areas 10 miles away. The thought of damaging my rear wheel drive 3.0ltr car driving in snow scares the **** out of me. So all considered its a cheap intro to 4x4 and pick up's. I will only do a couple of thousand miles a year with it.

On the plus side, I now know I want one and will use it, so later in the year a newer replacement will be getting looked at :)

Nissan will pay you out ! Dont worry on that one and have been giving fair money, however they wont cover any extra you spend on it now ,its a shame for you but that is why they have got cheaper. To be honest the previous owner would have got more for it if they had checked it. If it was me I would be questioning how it got an MOT so soon before you bought it as the examiners have clear instructions on how to look carefully

FWIW if you look again for your use and the roads you describe get a L200 as the transmission will suit you better as you can use it in 4WD on tarmac without screwing up the transmission. I am looking forward to it finding its way into the 2022 Navara.

Hi guys new to the forum, have read a lot about the rust problems and my 2006 nav failed it’s mot on the rust on the chassis so the previous owner had the strength plates welded in place, went back to the same mot and passed, after reading a lot about this I am very worried as I ha e 3 kids and a new born on the way, as the truck is 14 years old will they still check and would they still pay out. Due to being on the covid19 don’t no how to go about this, who would I contact etc I’m just about to have all the truck sign writing and have just had new wheels arrive etc but I don’t want it to fail on me pic of my truck attached. Hope someone can fill the light.

Hi landmannn thanks for a quick reply, I just uploaded some pics of the outside just to show what I had got, me being paranoid iv just jumped out of bed in my boxes run to my garage up the road and took a couple of pictures and video (of the truck) of course don’t no if you can see anything by this. Hope these are clear and helps. Don’t think it will let me upload a video as it didn’t show up the video when trying to upload.
